Dear Monsieur Gagnon and Fatima,
Today, the entire SOPAR team joins me in expressing our deep appreciation and heartfelt thanks for your invaluable partnership, which over many years has transformed the lives of some of the most disadvantaged communities in rural India.
A few more water projects are successfully completed and I am pleased to submit the project completion report (#3 of 5). As you know, access to clean water is not only a vital need but also a fundamental human right. Yet, thousands of families in India continue to approach SOPAR - Bala Vikasa in hope that this right may finally become a reality for their communities. Huge Thanks to the continued generosity of Marcel and Luce Baril, a total of 1,540 villagers in Dacharam, Kurva Colony & Vaspula now have access to clean and safe drinking water through the installation of one water purification system and two borewells. Please find attached a brief projects summary along with some photos.
Community Water purification system in Dacharam:
Before a village was approved for a Community Water Purification System project, our local partner Jana Vikasa conducted a detailed feasibility study and assessed its readiness and long-term commitment. This included community meetings to confirm participation, asset mapping to evaluate local capacities, water quality testing, and, if eligible, final approval followed by the formation of a village Water Committee. The location for project implementation was identified in consultation with village leaders and the village council (Gram Panchayat), who also provided the site, water source, motor, and pipeline (village funds or local donors contribute). Villagers contributed by covering 20% of the machine cost, purchasing memberships, and participating in project activities, altogether accounting for around 50% of the total project cost and fostering strong community ownership. This community-owned project follows a social enterprise model, bringing multiple long term benefits to the entire community.
Boewells with manual pump: In some villages, access to water remains a challenge, with many communities still needing a borewell project which serves 35-50 families. Thanks to your support, we have helped build two new borewells.
Overall, rRegular consumption of safe water allows villagers to experience the domino effect on their living conditions. This impact goes beyond improved health, it reduces medical expenses, lowers absenteeism at work, boosts income and livelihoods, and enhances overall family and community well-being. With a sufficient quantity of water now available close to home, families can also use it to maintain hygiene, care for animals, and tend to their gardens.
The benefits also extend socially and indirectly: progress in gender equality, the breakdown of harmful prejudices and superstitions, and the development of a stronger culture of mutual support. Some of these changes are tangible and lasting, particularly for women and girls. No longer do they have to undertake long, exhausting, and often dangerous walks to fetch small amounts of unsafe water for their families. Girls can now continue their education, and their mothers are able to attend training sessions to improve their access to better livelihoods. For the women, men, and children of Dacharam, Kurva colony and Vaspula who for the first time in their lives have access to clean water, your selfless gesture has opened the door to a more stable and brighter future.
Your support is transforming the lives of hundreds of marginalized individuals in rural India by providing 24/7 access to safe, affordable drinking water, a sustainable source of well-being for 1,540 people in rural India. We are deeply grateful to the generous donors, Marcel and Luce, whose commitment has made this progress possible. Our heartfelt thanks also extend to all members of the Fondation Coup de Cœur for your continued and invaluable partnership.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Shobha Singareddy
