The project:

Project description:

While the existing 17 km of pipeline was accessible to over 600 families, today, much of the infrastructure has corroded/deteriorated over the years and is currently inoperable. Along its length are three water tanks, one cattle dip and a supply to a secondary school. A pump shall be provided, including an automated system on-site to power the pump. A survey was undertaken to assess the capacity and water resource at the Tshashane River and the river was found be sustainable source of water.
This project with a total cost of $27,000 will provide clean drinking water to more than 3,600 beneficiaries.

The request:

Dear Jean and Fatima,

We are writing regarding the ongoing discussions with Greg Peddle on a cooperative water project in Zimbabwe between our two clubs; namely the REFURBISHMENT OF THE TSHELANYEMBA-NYASHONGWE PIPELINE PROJECT.
The attached proposal outlines the details of the project, the estimated costs as well as a projected budget.
The intention of this letter is to convey the full support of the Rotary Club of St.John’s Northwest (SJNW) for the project, and to begin discussions on how we can best work together.
Our Club (and specifically Greg) has very close ties to the Tshelanyemba region, and we have made over a dozen trips into the area. Our many projects supporting the hospital and surrounding village include the following:
- Hundreds of thousands of dollars in delivered medical equipment and supplies, as well as useful dry goods for the schools and hospital.
- Construction of a nursing residence.
- Fencing of 10 acres of farmland
- Refurbishment and remediation of agricultural water tanks and irrigation systems.
- Construction and start-up of a poultry farm.
- Installation of a solar pumping station to provide reliable fresh water to the hospital.
While all these initiatives have helped ease the need in this region, it is a proverbial “drop in the bucket”. The region continues to struggle as poverty is endemic in the area. This project will help hundreds of families with the most basic of human needs.

Our Board of Directors has agreed in principle to the project and is ready to procede.

Thank you for your collaboration in this big impact project.

Yours in Rotary,

Michael Caines, President and

Darlene Spracklin-Reid, Past President
