Hello Jean and Fatima,
First of all, thank you for your continued financial support for our water projects in Peru. I write to you today to seek your support once again for another water project, which will be this time in the village of Santa Clotilde, still in Peru.
This village is located on the banks of the Napo River, which empties into the Amazon River downstream from Iquitos. During the school year, the population reaches 5,000. Indeed, several students from surrounding villages and even families come to live in Santa Clotilde. The kindergarten, primary and secondary schools host some 1 300 students. Aboriginals live mainly from fishing and subsistence farming.
There is no drinking water in the village. The waters of the Amazon are increasingly contaminated. People consume surface water from a small stream. In 1985, two missionaries from the Vicariate of San José del Amazonas, Maurice Schroeder, OMI of Saskatchewan and Jack McCarthy of Wisconsin, both priests and doctors, founded a hospital in Santa Clotilde to meet the dire health needs of the natives of the Napo River. The hospital has about forty beds and serves in addition to the health posts or dispensaries of the twelve surrounding villages. Several doctors from western Canada and the US take turns volunteering to support hospital staff.
Last November, my colleague Annick Delestre and I met with Father Maurice at the Oblate House in Ottawa. He told us about the problems that patients and hospital staff were experiencing with contaminated water. We agreed that the Water Mission (WM) staff in Iquitos should go on a feasibility study to give the village water, which has been done recently. Following a visit and a summary assessment by the Water Mission staff lately, $ 57,000.00 is required to provide drinking water in the village, hospital, nursery, primary and secondary schools. This is the first phase of the project that will take place from the fall of 2017. For this first stage at a cost of $ 57,000.00, the Pango organization of Fathers Schroeder and McCarthy will provide $ 14,250.00 and the Wings of Hope are committed to providing $ 32,750.00. We are therefore missing $ 10,000.00 to fund the project. The project will be carried out by Water Mission, under the direction of engineer Juan Simon, who has strong experience in this region.
I hope again that you will give us financial support to carry out this wonderful project.
Thanks in advance,
André Franche
