Mister Jean Gagnon and Mrs. Fatima Lahmami Langlois,
Let me introduce myself, Kurt Kowalchuk, a member of the Rotary Club of down town Calgary and also a member of its World Community Service Committee. What a small world when we realize that my wife Manon comes from Quebec Province and speaks French.
Sorry for the delay in responding to your email. It was forwarded to me on November 2nd, the day my wife (a fellow Rotarian) and I departed for South East Asia. We have been in Cambodia for the last two weeks, and will be here for two more weeks.
While we are here we are focusing on a number of activities. The first is to provide training to build the capacity of a local NGO, Sustainable Cambodia. This is the third year that we have done this. The second is that my wife Manon is the in final stages of getting approval from The Rotary Foundation for a significant Global Grant funded education project here. The third activity is related to a WASH program at schools.
This WASH program is what I have been spending much of my time on during our visit. The inspiration and much of the needs assessment for this project came out of our visit to Cambodia last year. The intent is to bring a WASH program to schools in two of the districts (Bakan and Kravanh) in the Pursat Province. The target schools for a large part would be the same as the education project is targeting.
What will be included in this WASH project would be; ensuring that there is an adequate supply of water, installation of a large scale bio-sand filter (thousands of litres per day), latrines, hand washing facilities, and of course hygiene education.
We have partnered with Clear Cambodia (clearcambodia.org), whose primary focus is on WASH projects. They developed the large scale bio-sand, financed and coached by Samaritan’s Purse. To date they have installed more than 400 of these filters in schools and communities across the country. This filter has been adopted by CAWST as one of the products that they will provide technical assistance and training on. CAWST as developed a comprehensive installation and maintenance manual.
If you wish an electronic copy of this, I can forward it to you.

Yours in Rotary,
Kurt Kowalchuk
Member of World Community Service Committee
