The request:

Dear Fatima and Jean,

The Rotary Club of Westford, MA is raising money for a water/sanitation project in the Honduras community of Ostuman which is in the village of Copan. The project will be managed by Water Missions International headquartered in Charleston, SC.
The community of Ostuman is not unlike the millions of communities across the world that lack access to safe water. The regional government lacks resources to tackle these problems and promote development, which leaves the community with underdeveloped infrastructure. Children are constantly sick and missing school. Parents are trapped, desiring more for their families.
Progress is stunted. Without help, there is little hope for this forgotten community. Contaminated water is a primary factor perpetuating the continuous poverty cycle plaguing this community.
Currently, diarrheal illness, intestinal worms, malaria and unidentified water borne illnesses are prevalent in Ostuman and members of the community know that their existing water source is contaminated. It is our goal to deliver a sustainable safe water solution, healthy latrines, and significant health and hygiene training in an effort to transform lives.
Below are the steps that will be taken to meet this goal:
1. The centralized filtration system will provide economical safe water to all residents. Household pour-flush latrines will provide access to improved sanitation.
2. A Safe Water and Sanitation Committee (elected by the community members) will be responsible for long-term management of the water project on behalf of the community. The project will function as a community water utility where fees will be established to allow for sustainable operation of the water treatment system by funding operation and maintenance expenses. Community members will be empowered to build their household latrine in order to generate investment and personal ownership.
3. Community members will be trained in topics which include water usage and contamination,
water treatment and storage, hygiene practices, and sanitation.
Any amount your organization can contribute will be much appreciated by our club, by our District, and by Rotary International.

Regards,
