Mr. Jean Gagnon and Ms. Fatima Langlois,
The district of Dargo is composed of nineteen villages and covers an area of 558 km2.
Today the population of Dargo is more than 30,000 inhabitants.
The religions practiced are as follows: Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam and Animism. There are 2 420 Christians and 1 259 catechism students. The inhabitants are mostly farmers and herders. The village of Signoogin has 1113 inhabitants.
In general, the problem of water and especially potable water is severe in the countries of the Sahara desert area, particularly Burkina Faso. In the village of Signoogin, located in the district of Dargo, there are a lot of difficulties to have a drinking water supply. Indeed, the only working water well in the village of Signoogin is at their primary school. Constant use of this well by the villagers greatly disrupts the activities of the students. Today, I must say with regret that almost all of the population of Signoogin does not always have access to drinking water and women must travel over 10 km to gain access. During the rainy seasons, they use contaminated water from river backwaters which causes many diseases and a very high infant mortality.
The presence of a young catechism teacher in this village for two years helped the village leaders realize that a better access to drinking water would contribute greatly to the improvement of their living conditions and health. Thus, seven village leaders from Signoogin accompanied by their catechism teacher came to meet us to ask for help to drill a well. This is the reason for our project.
The implementation of this project will be led by me (parish priest of Dargo) in collaboration with the management committee of the water supply in the village. The committee will help to find a good place for conducting the drilling and will be responsible for collecting funds from villagers to participate in its construction and the good management of the well after its completion. The committee will therefore receive training on this subject. The district council of Dargo in recommending this project will be responsible for the training of the village committees for management of water supply and will have volunteers who will ensure the maintenance of the facilities. The management committee of the future water supply is composed of 9 members.
Monitoring, control and evaluation of the project:
In collaboration with the village leaders, I will ensure that the project, a final report and its follow-up are completed. All our actions will be supported by the council of the rural district of Dargo. At the end of the project, an invoice will be given to justify the effective completion of the request. A final report, accompanied by photos, will be presented to the donors. The total cost of our project is estimated at $13,700 CAN. We make a local contribution of $1, 400 can and we ask the Foundation Coup de Cœur a sum of $12,300 CAN to complete this drilling.
