The request:

Dear Mr. Gagnon,

In reference to the funds, we received from the Fondation Coup de Cœur early this fiscal year 2022-23, today with immense gratitude I share with you the completion report (#1) of the following projects:

We thank the generous support of Marcel and Luce Baril and the Fondation Coup de Cœur for providing access to clean and affordable water and improving lives of 1,400 marginalized people in rural India. This allows the women, men, and children to enjoy the multiple benefits through water. It has a significant impact on their health, which in turn has a positive influence on their
quality of life. Water is available 24/7 in their community.
Children can now devote more time to their studies and that parents, especially women, have time to do a better paid work. Through effective community-based approach involving communities at all stages.
Committees were guided and supported to participate actively making them to take the ownership of the project where community members become true agents of change. Local contributions were mobilised for the project implementation.
Water purification project - A success story: Mugdhoom Thanda with 200 families is a newly formed Gram Panchayath (village council). Main occupation in the village is agriculture who are small-scale farmers or daily wage labour. Village do not have drinking water source, faced lot of problems as they must collect water from another village located almost 10 kilometers away. Not many families can afford to buy commercial water and so they end up drinking the contaminated water.
One day the village sarpanch (mayor) Mrs. Banoth Laxmi, and her husband Swami Nayak heard from their neighbouring village about the water purification plant sponsored by SOPAR-Bala Vikasa. As the village is benefiting for the project, they were suggested to contact Bala Vikasa and to fill an application. Soon, Laxmi with the support of her husband who is an active member of the village, approached Bala Vikasa and explained their dire situation. After reviewing their application as per the project set criteria, Bala Vikasa conducted village feasibility study and later selected the village. This brough so much joy in the village. Later in a village level meeting Bala Vikasa explained all project details and its importance to all the members.
Despite being a small village with limited resources, as they understood the dire need for clean water, they got united and slowly pooled the needed local contribution to renovate the room to install the purification machine. Water committee was active, mobilized families, memberships were taken care, operator was hired and successfully inaugurated their project. Villagers are very happy that they now have access to clean and affordable water in their own community and no need to travel long distance anymore.
“As a woman leader, I was bit shy at first but with the motivation of Bala Vikasa, I took an active role in the project. I feel so proud as a woman mayor of the village that our village cooperated well to successfully inaugurate the project. I have gained confidence and respect in the village. Most importantly, I am so happy as we have more time to do chores at home and spend time with our children. Project brought new life to our village and we thank generous support of the donors” - Banoth Laxmi, Village mayor.
On behalf of Mugdhoom Thanda, Devunigutta Thanda and Ghotkuri villagers, and entire SOPAR-Bala Vikasa team, I thank deeply all the members of the “Fondation Coup de Cœur and the generous donors Marcel and Luce” for your generosity and partnership.

Sincerely,

Shobha Singareddy
